I'm in !!

Finally, I have an unconditional offer to study medicine- whoot! This september I'll start studying medicine at uni and I thought it would be good to share my experiences. I'm really new at blogging so sorry in advance for some really dull posts. 

So, why medicine? I began to really take an interest in medicine during the first year of my GCSE's. I think it started off largely due to a really enthusiastic and inspiring science teacher who seemed like she actually enjoyed the subject and her passion really came across, she had an interest in human biology and so obviously I developed one too. Later I think medicine became attractive because it was one of the hardest subjects to get into at university and I just wanted to prove that I could. This is arguably not the best reason for wanting to enter the medical profession and I would agree. As I began to jump through the various hoops that med school admission tutors set for us applicants, and embarked on my work experience and voluntary work, my reasons for wanting to do medicine changed. I saw that practising medicine isn't just about treating disease but about treating the patient as a whole. Speaking to patients I began to understand the huge emotional and mental impact that physical illness can have. Speaking to doctors, I realised that practising medicine is as much about troubleshooting and problem solving as it was about 'healing' patients. I guess then it's the truly varied nature of medicine that attracts me to it.
